Internship Position

Summer 2015

The Town of Virginia City Historic Preservation Office is accepting applications for student internships for the 2015 field season.

The Historic Preservation Office (HPO) facilitates the Certified Local Government program in cooperation with the Montana State Historic Preservation Office, and provides opportunity for students to participate in historic preservation, archaeology, and cultural resource stewardship at the local level.

Qualified applicants must have the ability to work independently and perform both field and archival duties of the position. Previous experience and education in archaeology, historic preservation, anthropology or related discipline is preferred, with experience in heritage resource documentation and reporting, and web development highly desirable.

Projects of the 2015 summer field season will include ongoing survey and preservation of the three historic cemetery sites in Virginia City, and related field, archival, and ethnographic data collection and reporting.

In addition to gravesite preservation, assistance is also needed in the assessment and stabilization of historic masonry and foundation systems, to include mortar analysis and applications of historic lime based mortars.

Developing the Town of Virginia City preservation digital database, educational outreach, and web based resources are additionally among the projects of 2015.

The position is projected to require 120-150 hours of project assistance, to be completed during the summer of 2015, and offers a stipend of $1500.

Full access to the Town of Virginia City office and local archives will be available, in addition to office work space and local Wi-Fi connection.

All intern contributions to project reporting will receive inclusion in Town of Virginia City publications and CLG reports, and support the preservation of the Virginia City National Historic Landmark.
